Property Description
In 1895, four local brewers came together to create a complex that would produce over 300,000 barrels of beer annually and would eventually be known as Dubuque Brewing & Malting Company. The plant, at 224,000 sq ft, was smaller only to its counterparts in St. Louis and Milwaukee and was considered to be the most modern of its time. While the company met its demise in 1915 due to prohibition in Iowa (prior to the Federal enactment in 1919), the property remained critically important to local commerce. Following rumors of Al Capone shipping beer out of the building in milk cans during prohibition, it was used extensively by Corn Belt Packing Company, H&W Motor Express & Dubuque Packing Company in Dubuque's long-storied history in the meat packing industry into the 1980's. Today, approximately 75,000 sq ft of the historic structure remains on a nearly three-acre site at the corner of 30th & Jackson Streets. While a portion of the building grew unstable and eventually demolished earlier this year, the remaining structure and cleared site offers a very unique development opportunity to preserve an iconic piece of Dubuque's culture and blend it with modern mix of commercial and residential space demanded by the neighborhood. Some additional site cleanup work is in progress by the seller and will be completed this fall.
